How it works

When the driver presses the DRS button on a designated straight, a flap in the rear wing opens. This dramatically reduces aerodynamic drag, allowing the car to reach a higher top speed.

When can it be used?

Only in pre-defined DRS zones, and only when the driver is within 1 second of the car ahead at a detection point. It cannot be used in the first two laps of a race or after a safety car restart.

Why does it exist?

Modern F1 cars produce so much aerodynamic turbulence ('dirty air') that following another car closely is very difficult. DRS counteracts this to encourage overtaking.
